Mazda recalls 2010-2013 Mazda3, 2012-2015 Mazda5, 2013-2016 CX-5, 2016 CX-3: 2.2 million affected
Mazda reports that it plans to recall some 2.2 million vehicles to address a problem with their rear hatches. Roughly one-third of the affected vehicles are registered in North America
The recall stems from corrosion affecting the hatch lift supports. Mazda reports that the protective coating applied to the supports at the factory wasn't adequate to protect them from water intrusion.

Though water in the supports would be bad enough, the corrosive effect will be magnified if that water contains road salts, like the kind used for de-icing in some parts of the country. If the corrosion is severe enough, the supports can break, potentially injuring anyone standing below. To date, however, Mazda says that it's received no reports of injuries.
The recall affects the following models:
- 2016 Mazda CX-3
- 2013-2016 Mazda CX-5
- 2010-2013 Mazda Mazda3
- 2012-2015 Mazda Mazda5
Mazda says that the recall includes over 759,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.
By October, Mazda expects to mail recall notices to owners, encouraging them to take their vehicles to dealerships for service. Dealers will replace both lift supports at no charge.
