The racing version of Mazda's newest Miata, the ND MX-5 Cup, is a brilliant little race car. That's not really surprising, since every Miata race car has been a brilliant little race car. But it has been lagging in one area: protection from the elements.

Unlike every car before it, the ND Cup did not have a factory-approved hard top for use on the race car. Drivers had to make do with the open top experience (which, frankly, is just fine and dandy). But now, for those who want or need a hardtop, there is a factory-approved model available for $4,420 (Update: Mazda has actually cut the price of the hardtop to $3,085, or the price of a rattier NA Miata. - Ed.)

That sounds like a lot, but that's because it's approved for motorsports, which means it's likely both stronger and lighter than a hardtop for the road car. If you just kind of want a hardtop for your ND cup car, why not just buy an NA Miata with a hardtop. You could likely get both together for the same price.
