The IMSA Continental Sportscar Challenge is known as a down-to-Earth racing series full of relatively tame cars. Caymans, Mustangs, and the occasional Aston Martin fill the field, making it a balanced race with a lot of exciting action.

IMSA announced via its Twitter account this morning VOLT Racing, along with the help of Automatic Racing will be fielding a factory-built McLaren 570S GT4 for the 2017 Continental Sportscar series. That's, uh, quite a step up from a Cayman. At least, it appears to be.

In order to compete in CSC, the 570S had to be considerably detuned. It actually makes about 420 horsepower in GT4 guise so it has parity with other cars in the class. So it's not like the 570 will be a rocketship out there with 200 more horsepower than anything on the track. It should fit in quite nicely.

The head of VOLT Racing, Alan Brynjolfsson, picked the car for obvious reasons.

"I chose the McLaren because of the balanced handling of its mid-engine platform. Combined with its excellent aerodynamics, stiff carbon fiber tub, and success in winning GT4 in Europe, I felt the McLaren gave us the best chance of winning," he said.

The team is taking delivery of two 570S GT4s this week, just in time for testing.

Brynjolfsson, along with professional driver Chris Hall, will be at the wheel during the season opener in Daytona on January 26th.
