A performance car is only as good as its brakes. You can build the most powerful engine the world's ever seen, you can only go so fast if you can't stop. Unsurprisingly, the upcoming and mega-quick McLaren 720S will have some seriously impressive brakes. McLaren says the 720S' braking performance nearly matches that of the 903-hp P1.

In its latest information drip, McLaren announced that the 720S can come to a complete stop from 124 mph (200 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds and 384 feet (117 meters). That's a solid twenty meters shorter than the outgoing 650S, which to be clear, has incredible levels of braking performance.

The 720S' stopping power comes courtesy of new brake calipers that are lighter and stiffer than those in the 650S, as well as carbon ceramic rotors. This upcoming supercar also benefits from a movable rear air brake that generates additional stopping force, and new, bespoke Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

McLaren also released a video of its Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin getting some impressive slip angles in a 720S prototype on track. The 720S has a drift mode to help drivers pull off slides like this, but don't interpret that as a knock on Goodwin's talent. Goodwin races the hell out of an ex-Chris Amon McLaren Can-Am car that he owns.

We'll see the 720S in full next month at the Geneva Motor Show, but really, we just want to drive the thing. Did we mention it has a Drift Mode?
