To announce the development of his new sports car, McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray put together a retrospective of his 50 years of car design. It included almost all of his race cars designed for Brabham and McLaren, his personal road cars, and a lot of t-shirts. Wait what?

Murray was known for wearing t-shirts on the F1 grid - like the Sex Pistols shirt pictured above - and over time acquired 980. A number that even surprised Murray, who estimated he had "a few hundred" before his collection was cataloged.

"I don't consider myself a collector," Murray told Motorsport.tv. "It's just every time I went to a gig, or a new Grand Prix circuit, or a new country, I bought a t-shirt."

A number of his t-shirts were on display at Gordon Murray Design for his retrospective, and he even wore the Sex Pistols shirt to recreate a famous photo.

The rest of the interview is fascinating too. Murray talks about the best F1 cars of his design, and the highlights from his garage. The Lotus Elan is a particular favorite - so much so that Murray admits that it's "the best sports car I've ever driven."

"The feedback from the controls is mind-boggling," Murray said of the Elan. "I tried to get that steering feel [with the F1], and I missed it. The F1's good, but it's not as good as an Elan."
