  • McLaren Racing is opening a new chapter in 2022.

  • It has decided to enter the Extreme E series, after a “detailed evaluation by McLaren against a set of strategic, economic, and operational criteria.”

  • McLaren Racing plans to operate the team using existing personnel from outside F1 program.

Formula 1's McLaren Racing says it plans to enter a team in the electric Extreme E off-road series starting next year. Since entering F1 in 1966 McLaren is among the winningest teams ever with 182 wins and 12 drivers’ titles. Last year McLaren began running IndyCar with the Arrow McLaren SP.

McLaren already has experience in EV racing; it developed and supplied the battery powertrains for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Formula E EV single-seaters. McLaren said the decision to enter Extreme E follows a “detailed evaluation of the series by McLaren against a set of strategic, economic, and operational criteria. These were underpinned by a clear imperative for accelerating McLaren Racing’s own sustainability mission, which places carbon reduction, the recycling, reuse, and elimination of waste, and diversity, equality, and inclusion at its core.”
