Within the last year or so, GT4 became one of the hottest classes in motorsport, thanks to new cars from McLaren, Porsche, Ford, and soon, BMW. Mercedes-AMG will enter the fray with the the GT4, a racer based off the 577-HP track-ready AMG GT R.

The move into GT4 comes as Mercedes-AMG expands its motorsports presence globally. The new AMG GT3, which has found success in European endurance racing, will make its U.S. debut in 2017, competing in the IMSA WeatherTech series. For IMSA, AMG partnered with North Carolina-based Riley Motorsports for a two-car factory-backed team, with additional customer teams forthcoming.

The GT4 will be developed for AMG's Customer Sports program, which currently campaigns the AMG GT3, and the older SLS AMG GT3 in various series around the world.

Unfortunately, AMG was light on details in announcing the GT4's development. A short press release says the GT4 is based on the AMG GT R, but it's unclear if a version of the road car's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, or the GT3's 6.2-liter V8. It's also unclear when the GT4 will be race-ready.

In any case, the AMG GT4 is something to look forward to, given the rapid proliferation of great GT4 racers available. It's a smart move for Mercedes too, given that the lower cost of entry will get more AMG race cars around the world.
