The Mercedes-AMG Hypercar Is Reportedly Being Co-Developed With Lotus

From Road & Track

Yesterday, rumors about an F1-inspired hypercar from Mercedes-AMG intensified, with both TopGear.com and Evo offering new details on the supposed project. With these rumors, we learned a few details about the car, but now, we've just heard that AMG might be developing the car with a very intriguing partner.

Autocar reported Wednesday that Lotus will assist AMG on chassis development for the upcoming hypercar. This might sound weird initially, but Lotus does this sort of development work for various automakers all the time. Everyone from Aston Martin to Hyundai has benefitted from the Lotus magic.

As Autocar reports, Lotus was involved with the final calibration on "another recent Mercedes performance model," which we assume refers to the AMG GT S. If that's true, a relationship between the two companies is in place. While we've reported on some of the projects Lotus has had a hand in, most of them remain a secret for obvious reasons.

As we reported yesterday, this Mercedes hypercar project centers around a carbon fiber monocoque, planned to use a street version of Mercedes-AMG's turbocharged V6 engine designed for Formula 1 racing. (Lotus Cars, which owns Lotus Engineering, is entirely separate from the Lotus F1 Team that raced in F1 last year, in case you were wondering.)

Of course, everything we've heard is very much unconfirmed by Mercedes, but we're getting very excited to see what AMG might cook up. This project sounds like it'd be an excellent competitor to the Aston Martin AM-RB 001.
