Yahoo Autos Mercedes Is Basically Building A Brand New G Wagen
Dinosaurs have to die, no question about it. But while Land Rover decided to call it a day with the Defender entirely only to build a brand new unibody SUV as a replacement, Mercedes-Benz is not going that far with its military truck from 1979. With so many new versions scoring the best sales results for the G just last year, the boxiest Mercedes is here to stay for a long while. But not without getting some serious upgrades first.
Since the news is a rumor from England, take the figures with a grain of salt, but thereport states that the next Gs will be "more than 661 lbs. lighter" thanks to an extensive use of aluminum over the current steel sheetmetal. The truck is also rumored to become "around 100mm wider" to improve stability at the high speeds provided by those AMG engines.
The new generation is set to get the new Mercedes straight-six as well as a fresh diesel Daimler is about to put into the E-Class. The Gs will get more efficient thanks to the new nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, cylinder deactivation and an electromechanical steering system, while passenger comfort will be greatly improved by the additional space and interior bits borrowed from the current C-Class, including the digital display. What's more, the ride comfort is supposed to get a boost from either a three- or a four-link suspension at the front. Talk about a full makeover!
Whatever Mercedes ends up doing with Magna's crazy test pilots at hand, as long as the G remains an off-roader with at least three locking differentials and a body bolted on a rigid frame, we'll be happy with the additional legroom.
