Mercedes-Benz Launches Electric "Generation EQ" Concept in Paris

Mercedes-Benz is promoting its upcoming EQ line of electric vehicles with the Generation EQ Concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The German premium car brand this week unveiled an electric sporty SUV coupe concept to preview a new range of battery-electric vehicles that it hopes will account for at least 15% of global sales by 2025, according to parent firm Daimler’s CEO Dieter Zetsche.

Mercedes defines EQ as electric intelligence. This new lineup will include EQ models equipped with energetic electric drive systems that are powered by two electric motors that can produce up to 402 horsepower or 300 kW for all-wheel drive (AWD) delivery with scalable battery components, according to a company statement. The range of these new EQ vehicles was exhibited in the new small Generation EQ SUV Concept that should average 500 km (311 miles) on a charge.

The Generation EQ Concept features a sleek, clean, simple exterior with smooth surfaces but a futuristic flourish and large 21-in. wheels. There are no door handles and mirrors since cameras provide rear vision. The hood is black and folds into a black frontal face with artificial grille lines and a bold Mercedes-Benz moniker with blue accents.

Generation EQ models will be built on a vehicle architecture that is made of a mix of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber, developed specifically for Lithium battery-electric models with specific wheelbase and track widths as well as all other system components, including batteries. Through modular building-block systems these EQ models can be configured as SUVs, sedans, coupes, and cabriolets or convertibles.

Not only will the EQ range offer “contemporary, sustainable mobility,” but models will feature innovative interiors with futuristic ergonomic seating and a dashboard that features electronic intelligence displayed on a blue-lit 24-in. touch screen instead of an instrument panel. Touch screens with swipe menus are even featured on the steering wheel. Speed and driving dynamics will be automatically adjusted with new electronic systems, which will lead the new EQ range’s data sensors eventually delivering autonomous driving capability and assisting in accident prevention, according to Mercedes.
