Mercedes-Benz Will Reportedly Create an Electric Car Sub-Brand

From Road & Track

Like seemingly every automaker in existence, Mercedes-Benz is taking electric vehicles very seriously. Of course, we've already seen prototypes of its electric semi running around, but the company also has a line of electric passenger cars and SUVs planned. Now, we hear that it might create a separate sub-brand for these EVs.

This rumor comes to us courtesy of a Bloomberg report published Friday, which cites anonymous sources with knowledge of Mercedes-Benz's plans. The name for the sub-brand hasn't been decided, though apparently there's plans for two sedans and two SUVs. Mercedes previously announced that it will show off an electric SUV prototype at the Paris Motor Show this fall.

It sounds like what Mercedes is trying to do with its electric cars, is the same thing it's already done with AMG and Maybach. Instead of labeling cars from those sub-brands "Mercedes-Benz," they are sold as Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach to further differentiate from the rest of the lineup.

Mercedes-Benz needs cars to not only compete with the Tesla Model S and X, but with the upcoming Porsche Mission E sedan. Audi also has some electric cars planned in its future, so it's imperative Mercedes not get left behind.
