Electric cars are looking more and more like the future, and Mercedes-Benz knows it. According to a company official, Mercedes is planning an all-electric version of its most iconic model, the G-Class SUV.

Sascha Pallenberg, head of digital head of transformation at Mercedes, confirmed the existence of a factory electric G-wagon in the works via Twitter on Thursday:

According to Pallenberg, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius had talks regarding the elimination of the G-Class from the company's lineup, but decided against it, likely thanks to its continued popularity and iconic status among the brand faithful.

This isn't the first we've heard of an electric G-Class. Actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger commissioned a custom EV variant of the squared-off SUV in 2017, built by Kreisel Electric. It could hit 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, and had a range of 190 miles.

An electric G-Class wouldn't be the company's first modern EV. It currently sells the EQC, a crossover with over 400 horsepower that we loved when we drove it.
