Mercedes Is Reportedly Working On a Baby G-Wagen

From Road & Track

Do you love the rugged, old school looks of the Mercedes G-Class SUV, but don't want to drive around in what is essentially a huge 30-year-old military truck? Well Mercedes seems to think you do, because it's reportedly working on a smaller, cheaper, more modernized G-Wagen, dubbed the GLB.

According to a Wednesday report by U.K. publication Auto Express, Mercedes is working a a brand new small SUV that will slot in between the tiny GLA crossover and bigger GLC. But instead of using a brand new design, Mercedes has apparently opted to base the looks off of its famed off-road workhorse, the G-Wagen.

Auto Express says the GLB will draw heavily from both the G-Wagen and its other modern day crossover siblings, as well as the Ener-G Force concept the automaker revealed back in 2012 for the Los Angeles Design Challenge.

The GLB is also said to use a version of Mercedes Benz's new MFA2 architecture, which will underpin the next-generation A-, CLA-, and GLA-Class. Does that mean this baby off-roader will be more of a soft-roader like the Jeep Renegade? It sure seems that way.

Crossovers are huge moneymakers right now, so it only makes sense that Mercedes is thinking about adding another one to its lineup. Having one that looks like the G-Wagen we all know and love will be a refreshing sight among the sea of plain crossovers on the market today.
