The Mid-Engine Porsche 911 RSR's Profile Looks Awesome and It Sounds Fantastic

From Road & Track

Among the Panameras and turbocharged Boxsters at this week's LA Auto Show, Porsche will have something really special: Its all-new 911 RSR race car. The big news? It's going to be mid-engined.

Unlike the lesser, spec racing GT3 Cup, the new 911 RSR is built to compete in the GTE class against other factory racing cars like the Chevy Corvette C7.R, Ford GT, Ferrari 488 GTE, and more. In order to stay competitive, the Porsche motorsports team decided keeping the RSR's engine in the rear wasn't going to cut it any longer.

For the first time ever, Porsche has placed its iconic flat-six motor in the middle of the 911. Why? More balance and more grip. Despite what the purists say, the result is a more capable car, one that will likely put the 911 back up front.

On Wednesday, November 16th, Porsche is set to reveal the mid-engine 911 at the Los Angeles Auto show. To hold us over, it's dropped the above profile sketch and a short teaser video showing the new RSR ripping around a circuit, complete with that familiar flat-six wail.
