Yahoo Autos We Might Finally Get to See How the McLaren P1 Does at the Nurburgring
McLaren never publicized a Nürburgring lap time for its 903-hp P1, and it doesn't seem like the automaker ever will. However, UK-based tuning firm Lanzante Motorsport could give us the answer we seek, when its road-legal its P1 GTR-based, P1 LM takes to the 'Ring.
Lanzante Motorsport's Dean Lanzante told Autocar the company plans on bringing the P1 LM to the Nürburgring for testing this fall. While the main purpose of this isn't to set a lap record, Lanzante said that if conditions allow for it, they'll give it a shot.
"We've seen what the road car is capable of there and we've got simulations of what our car can do," Lanzante told Autocar. "Kenny Bräck is doing all of the driving, so if an opportunity arose, we have the right man for the job."
Bräck, an Indy 500 Champion, recently set the road-car lap record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the P1 LM. With 986 horsepower from a twin-turbo V8 and hybrid assistance, and race car-inspired aerodynamics, the P1 LM looks to be in good shape to dethrone the heavier, less-powerful 918 Spyder.
While the P1 LM looks like it has a shot at the record on paper, there are a few things standing in Lanzante's way.
"We don't have the finances or the time to do something like Porsche," Lanzante told Autocar. "If it rains, the track isn't fast enough, so we can't do a lap. And we don't want to do a Koenigsegg . . . "
Lanzante is referring to the Koengisegg One:1 that was destroyed during testing at the Nürburgring last month. With only six P1 LMs set to be produced, Lazante understandably doesn't want to stuff one into a wall.
So, if the stars align, Lanzante's P1 LM might become the fastest street car at the 'Ring. We doubt Porsche would be happy about that.
