When Honda revealed the current Civic, it promised us plenty of driving enjoyment. And as we found out on our first drive, Honda delivered. That's partly thanks to the torque you get with the Civic's new turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. It's a great little engine, and we've even heard reports that it makes the new Civic quicker than the old Civic Si.

Now, the last-generation Civic Si wasn't a slow car by any means. It could hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. But you had to rev the hell out of it to get it going, and even at 7000 rpm, it only made 201 horsepower. If you want low-end torque, you should look elsewhere.

Or you could talk to Emmanuel Burciaga from NA Performance. He specializes in building naturally aspirated Civics, and to show what's possible, he built the car seen in The Smoking Tire's latest One Take. It makes 330 horsepower at the wheels-no turbo, no blower, no nitrous, just a highly-tuned 2.5-liter stroker-and it's about as extreme as you'd want from a street car. Burciaga claims it runs an 11.3-second quarter mile with racing slicks mounted and the rear seats removed.

Sure, it took some serious modifications to get there, but boy does this car look like a blast to drive.
