Mountune's Ford Focus RS Only Gets 25 Extra Horses

From Road & Track

Mountune offers a whole range of Ford-approved tuner packages in the UK that can make your Fiesta or Focus faster without voiding the factory warranty. Their latest power upgrade is for the Focus RS, bringing the total output of everybody's favorite hatchback to 370 horsepower and 376 foot pounds (for a maximum of 12 seconds on overboost).

For this whopping 7 percent of extra power, Mountune charges £899, for which your approved dealer in the UK will upgrade the car with a high-performance air filter, bespoke alloy crossover duct with silicone hoses, an upgraded air re-circulation valve and revised software tuning for the engine ECU in just 1.5 hours.

Based on what I've gathered from Focus RS chief engineer Tyrone Johnson during the car's launch, the tunability of Ford's hot hatch is likely to be limited by it's drivetrain built around GKN's Twinster, which is an electro-hydraulic system with torque vectoring, consisting of a rear drive unit capable of overspeeding the rear wheels at a 1.8 ratio, with wet clutches on both sides and a separate cooler, connected to what acts as an open front diff with brake-based torque vectoring by a three-piece driveshaft.

345hp is what was deemed safe for series production, and 370 is probably within the design threshold. Anything above that feels like a gamble, especially knowning that Ford has broken quite a few prototypes before settling for these figures.

The good news is that the Ford Focus RS doesn't really need more power than its stock output. It's thirsty enough as it is.
