Mustang GT vs Focus RS: Which $40,000 Ford Is the Drag Race King?

From Road & Track

As performance cars go, the Ford Focus RS and Mustang GT couldn't be more different. About the only thing they have in common is price: Walk into a Ford dealer with around $40,000 in your pocket and you can have a high-tech hatch, or a V8-powered brute. The Mustang makes more power, but the Focus RS counters with a slick all-wheel-drive system.

Inevitably, someone was bound to set up this Blue Oval grudge match. As Top Gear Magazine demonstrates, both cars offer very different approaches to acquiring speed. But their results are shockingly close.

Thanks to its all-wheel-drive traction, the 350-hp Focus RS gets off the line quicker, but once the Mustang is moving, there's no arguing with its 435 ponies. The RS runs from 0-60 mph much quicker than the Mustang, but their 0-100 mph and quarter-mile times are damn near identical.

Top Gear only measures quarter-mile times to the nearest tenth, meaning that, by the stopwatch, the two cars ran identical times. But as you can see, the Mustang crosses the line just ahead of the Focus. On a longer runway, the pony car would run away from the hatchback.

Now, Top Gear just needs to hand these cars over to The Stig to see what they can do around the track.
