Coy Gibbs, a team executive at his father's championship-winning NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing and the father of 2022 Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs, died in his sleep last night. He was 49.

Gibbs was a former NASCAR driver himself for a few years, but he is better known as a leading executive at the JGR team. After a brief stint as a coaching assistant in the NFL alongside his father, Gibbs ran the JGRMX motorcycle racing team. He moved to the NASCAR program in 2015, eventually rising to the role of Chief Operating Officer. He held that title throughout the 2022 season.

Coy Gibbs is the second son of Joe Gibbs to pass away in the past three years. JD Gibbs, who was also just 49 when he died, announced a diagnosis of a degenerative brain disease in 2015 and passed away in 2019. Coy Gibbs moved into his executive role with JGR shortly after JD's diagnosis, effectively taking his brother's place as an organization leader.

Gibbs was at Phoenix Raceway yesterday for the celebration of his son Ty's first career NASCAR Xfinity Series championship. According to an announcement from Joe Gibbs Racing, he passed away in his sleep overnight. Ty Gibbs, who was scheduled to drive the No. 23 23XI Racing car in relief of the injured and retiring Kurt Busch during today's Cup Series finale, has stepped out of the car for the day. Daniel Hemric will race in relief of Gibbs.

He is survived by his wife Heather and their four children. Last night, during his son's championship celebration, he was able to pose for a photo with his wife, his father, and his son alongside Ty's first-ever NASCAR national series championship trophy.
