Todd Gilliland made his first 2022 Camping World Truck Series start a good one Saturday night in Knoxville, Iowa.

The full-time Cup Series rookie held off Truck Series veteran John Hunter Nemechek on a four-lap, race-ending restart dash to win the Clean Harbor 150 at the storied half-mile dirt track.

It was Gilliland’s third career truck victory, after Martinsville in 2019 and COTA at Austin last year. He was among four drivers who swapped the lead six times in the 150-lap, 75-mile race. After winning a heat race and starting ninth, the son of former Xfinity and Cup driver David Gilliland led three times for 58 laps, including the final 11. Carson Hocevar led the first 65 laps before engine problems sidelined him. Nemechek led 17 times and Grant Enfinger led 10.

No. 2 starter Hocevar took the lead at the green and led all 40 laps in Stage 1, easily beating Gilliland. Hocevar led the first 26 laps in Stage 2 before losing power and slowing on the track, handing the lead to Gilliland at lap 65. Gilliland then led the final 25 laps of Stage 2, beating Zane Smith. Enfinger’s one time in front were laps 92-101, but Gilliland soon took over, leading 32 of the last 49 laps to win by slightly less than a second. The race was slowed nine times for 45 caution laps.

Nemechek, the new points leader, was second after his ninth top-10 finish this season. The rest of Saturday night’s top-10: Zane Smith (now second in points, five behind Nemechek), Ty Majeski, Stewart Friesen (his wife, Jessica, finished 34th), Kraus, Matt Crafton, Enfinger, Tyler Ankrum, and Ben Rhodes. After being so strong for the first stage-and-a-half, Hocevar was scored an engine-related DNF 35th.
