The Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] Model X was launched with great fanfare in September, though at the time you could only put your name down for the range-topping 90D cars which start at $133,200, including a $1,200 destination charge.

The company has now opened up order books for a more affordable Model X variant: the 70D. This is the entry-level Model X, and its starting price comes in at $81,200, including destination. It has a 70-kilowatt-hour battery which the EPA estimates will afford it a driving range of approximately 220 miles.

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise as CEO Elon Musk said at the Model X’s launch that the high-riding hatch would, in general, cost $5k more than a comparable Model S. The Model S 70D is priced from $76,200, including destination.
