Insurance savings on the horizon for GM drivers

Cautious GM (GM) drivers have reason for excitement this summer.

That's when Progressive (PGR) Insurance and OnStar will launch a program that could provide insurance discounts based on the driver's behavior, according to the Detroit Free Press. Participating drivers will have their driving tendencies tracked by OnStar for 90 days, and their performance could lead to discounted insurance offers.

Greg Ross of General Motors' global connected consumer experience said the intent is to help the company better understand drivers' behavior. "This is the first time we can use actual driving behavior to deliver valuable important feedback to customers who want this information," he said.

The program will be available for all 2016 GM models, most 2015 models, and some 2014 and 2013 models and driving data will only be used following explicit customer consent, the report said.

Neither OnStar nor Progressive immediately responded to CNBC's request for comment.
