Lincoln Continental Concept Glitters in New York
Nobody saw this coming. The Lincoln Continental Concept that debuted at the 2015 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) is a preview of the new 2017 Lincoln Continental that the company plans to introduce next year.
Calling the Continental "the future of quiet luxury," Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company president and CEO, defined that concept with this explanation: "Luxury at its best is about simplifying and quietly exceeding expectations, rather than being the loudest statement on the road."
The automaker says the Continental signals a new face for Lincoln, the third attempt to redefine the brand's styling that the company has made during the past decade. The new grille design features a raised Lincoln star emblem centered within a polished aluminum latticework of repeating Lincoln emblem outlines, a shape that is also in evidence within the LED matrix headlights with laser-assist high beams.
Rhapsody Blue paint is designed to emulate the Continental's historical signature color. E-Latch door handles stow into the Continental's beltline for a clean profile, and the Continental Concept rides on 21-in. polished aluminum wheels.
Beneath the hood, a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 engine supplies the power, and this power plant is claimed to be exclusive to Lincoln. Adaptive steering is also standard, along with Lincoln Drive Control technology that equips the Continental with Comfort, Normal, and Sport driving modes.
Full-width taillights feature "light through chrome" technology. When they are not illuminated, the lenses look like chrome trim. When illuminated, they glow red. Also, as is true of recent Lincoln models, the Continental features Approach Detection technology, which illuminates the exterior and interior lighting when the key fob is detected within a certain proximity to the vehicle in order to welcome the driver and passengers.
Inside, the Continental features blue Venetian leather upholstery, Alcantara suede seat inserts and armrest covers, satin headliner, and shearling wood carpets. A mix of bright chrome and Rose Gold trim adds contrast, and gold LED ambient lighting glows softly after dark.
Active Noise Control ensures a quiet cabin, and occupants enjoy "first-class" accommodations including individual rear seats that offer 30-way power adjustment and the ability to conform to different passenger sizes and shapes. The rear seats provide full recline capability and the right rear passenger can power the front passenger's seat out of the way to expand legroom. The Continental Concept includes a computer tray, champagne chiller, and travel cases wrapped in Venetian leather.
A panoramic glass roof uses SmartGlass tint to block 99% of the sun's UV rays and to keep the cabin cooler by up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit. Rear-seat occupants have control over the rear climate system as well as the Revel Ultima premium surround-sound audio system, which includes Stereo, Audience, and On-Stage listening modes.
When the 2017 Continental goes on sale, expect it to offer an exhaustive roster of infotainment and safety technologies, including the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Enhanced Park Assist, and 360-degree camera systems found on the Continental Concept. Additional details about Lincoln's new flagship sedan will emerge as the production version of the car gets closer to reality.
