  • This is our best look yet at the next-generation Audi A3, although this one is in high performance RS3 guise.

  • It'll likely be powered by a higher-output version of Audi's turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder found in the new RS Q3.

  • Audi has yet to announce a reveal date or any details, but we expect it to arrive soon.

We still haven’t seen the next-generation Audi A3, but now that we've spotted this RS3 Sportback testing outside of the Nürburgring, perhaps it means we could see the next-generation A3, S3, and RS3 sooner than we thought.

The Sportback spotted outside the Green Hell has all of the telltale signs of an Audi with RS treatment. The front end features that gaping honeycomb grille and larger air intakes on each side of the lower fascia. Bulging fenders mean bigger tires and perhaps wider axles. Out back, we see those aggressively thin taillights, a diffuser-style rear bumper, and larger oval exhaust tips, which could be fake if we know Audi as well as we think we do.

It’s very likely that the RS3 will use the same turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder found in the previous-gen RS3. The turbo three-cylinder makes 394 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque in the new RS Q3, so we can expect that output to be quite similar in the new RS3, if not a touch more. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is also likely that will send power to all four wheels.

Unfortunately, the Sportback shown here probably won’t make its way to U.S. shores. We’ll only get the sedan. But we can still get excited because Audi did throw us a curveball when it announced that the new RS6 Avant wagon will come to the U.S. after all. Everyone, cross your fingers.
