The Next Gymkhana Car Is this Rad Subaru GL Wagon

We're finally getting close to the release of a new Gymkhana video, just over a year after Gymkhana 2020. That installment brought in Travis Pastrana to drive a custom, 862-hp version of the Subaru WRX STI. But this one will use something a little weirder and, to us, a little cooler.

Hoonigan and Subaru released images of the next car, a slammed, widebody version of a 1983 Subaru GL Wagon. A Subaru from an era before that was a household name, the GL is an off-the-wall choice but one any boxy wagon fan can get behind. Plus, this generation offered a hidden third headlight behind the badge, something even the most expensive 2022 Subaru cannot give you. Mercedes illuminated star, eat your heart out.

Of course, being a Gymkhana car, the actual example in question is basically unrecognizable from stock. Details are scarce, but we know it'll make 900 hp. Considering that the larger, more potent engine for the GL made 71 hp (a significant improvement over the 53-hp base car), 900 hp should be plenty to get the lightweight Subaru sideways. This being a Subaru—one available from new with a 4WD system—we expect the Gymkhana version to be all-wheel drive.

We'll have to wait for more details about the car but, given the history of the series, we expect the car to be pretty wild. In the meantime, you can rewatch old Gymkhana videos, something we tend to do annually.
