Nico Rosberg Signed His New Mercedes F1 Contract in Total, Awkward Silence

From Road & Track

Nico Rosberg, one of the drivers for the dominant Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, has announced via the team's Twitter today that he will renew his contract for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. For some reason, Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team boss, along with Rosberg, signed the contract in an empty room, in complete silence. We're not sure why the team decided to film this awkward encounter, but we do know the cameraman was cringing just as hard as we are.

This news comes over a year after current F1 Champion Lewis Hamilton renewed his contract with the AMG Petronas team, also through 2018. According to German news source Bild, Rosberg's deal included bonuses of around $50 million dollars.

Rosberg has been with the Mercedes Formula 1 team since its return to the sport in 2010, and has secured 19 Grand Prix wins in their cars. He currently holds the points lead for the 2016 season, with his teammate Hamilton just one point behind. The two drivers aren't really on good terms, and are often the center of drama on the track. Rosberg seems to like winning more than he dislikes Hamilton, though, since he's decided to stick around.

With both teammates sticking together for at least another two years, we're excited to see what sort of antics they'll get themselves into. Maybe they should, um, work on communicating a little bit more?
