No Big Deal: Porsche Absolutely Destroys the Old Nürburgring Lap Record

With its 5:19.55 lap, Porsche has absolutely crushed the course record at the 12.94-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife in its 919 Hybrid Evo endurance race car. To celebrate, we’re going to write this story covering the achievement in that amount of time, just to give you an idea of how brief it is.

The previous lap record, which had stood for 35 years, was 6:11.13, set by Stefan Bellof in a Rothmans Porsche 956C. Porsche’s 919 Hybrid Evo, modified from its race-compliant specification with updated aerodynamics, tires, and powertrain calibrations, shattered Bellof’s time by an insane 51.58 seconds. Which is just about how much time we have left on our clock at this point. The 919 lap was driven by five-time Nürburgring 24 Hours winner Timo Bernhard, and he averaged 145.3 mph. Think about that. Damn, we’re down to 30 seconds.
