  • Maserati has a new made-to-order program, called One of One, for colors, trims, and just about anything.

  • The automaker promises thousands of options to those willing to wait and pay extra.

  • The first custom Maserati is a Levante GTS (not pictured) that will make its debut at the New York auto show.

Until now, Maserati hasn't made a proper way to order fuchsia floormats and periwinkle seats with pearl accents underneath an orange silk headliner. The automaker would kindly refer you to that other Modenese automaker for that job or have you settle for a semi-custom appearance. Ermenegildo Zegna, the retail fashionisto on parent company Fiat Chrysler's board, has dressed up Maserati's lineup with silk trim; nevertheless, buying these cars has felt considerably less special than tailoring a custom suit.

The One of One factory program should tap the world's creative minds zeroing in on the trident badge. Maserati promises "thousands of interior and exterior options" and the freedom to work directly with the Italian design team on just about anything. We assume that means opening up Maserati's illustrious archives in addition to serving current tastes. Big-dish wheels off the Bora? How about matching the wood on the Sebring's thin steering wheel? So far Maserati hasn't excluded anything.

Maserati's most customizable car is the GranTurismo. You can spec an MC coupe or convertible from a choice of eight leathers, a dozen stitchings, eight carpets with six contrasting borders, eight steering wheel colors with carbon-fiber or faux-suede accents, six dash colors, six wood or carbon dash trims, and five faux-suede headliners. Then there are nine brake caliper colors, six wheels, and nine more "special" paints, including a choice of pearlescent finishes costing a cool $10,500. You can't go this deep with a Ghibli, Levante, or Quattroporte, all of which restrict each of these choices to a few or just one. But even this isn't enough.

The One of One program launches at the New York auto show, where Maserati will reveal a brown Levante with a new woven leather by Zegna. That will be available starting next spring, though we'd recommend waiting for Maserati's big book of never-before-seen options that should surpass anything a dealer can whip up on the online configurator.
