From Road & Track

Volvo’s Polestar division is moving from its position as Volvo’s in-house tuner to its own premium brand of sporty and electrified vehicles. Now the stunning Polestar 1, a high-performance plug-in hybrid two-door coupe, can be preconfigured and preordered by customers who have expressed interest in the vehicle.

The configurator gives a good glimpse at what’s in store for the first buyers of the Polestar 1. Based on the Volvo SPA platform that underpins the XC60 and V60 as well as the S90, V90, and XC90, it is fitted with a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine and two rear-mounted electric motors that produce a total output of 591 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, substantially more than the Volvo S90 T8 plug-in hybrid sedan. Pure electric range is rated at just below 100 miles.

Having expressed interest in the Polestar 1, we got to play around in the configurator, which is not yet open to the general public. It allowed us to choose from the colors white, silver, gray, black, and a cold metallic blue. The 21-inch wheels, shod with 275/30 front and 295/30 rear tires, come in gloss black, matte black, or with a silver diamond-cut finish. The interior is available in anthracite or in anthracite with light gray “zinc”-colored seats.

That’s as far as choices go right now, but we are told that a few more options will become available as we get closer to the production start.

Even now, the illustrations certainly whet our appetite for the real thing. There is no official pricing yet but we hear that the Polestar 1 will retail for $155,000. Polestar will also offer a subscription arrangement. If you want to be among the first owners of the new brand, you need to make a $3100 down payment that is fully refundable. Deliveries are set to begin in mid-2019.
