The 1980s were dark days for factory-bred performance. Most of the things that defined American performance in the previous decades-large-displacement V-8s, air- and fuel-swilling carburetors, and unrestricted exhausts, just to name the highlights-had been, by the second half of the '70s, either regulated out of existence or hamstrung by the rising cost of fuel and insurance. Buick took this dire situation into its own hands and, in a feat of forced-induction inspiration, busted forth with the turbocharged 1984 Buick Regal Grand National.

Yes, we know the Grand National debuted in 1982, but that naturally aspirated sticker-job version was far cry from the blown model that hit the streets in 1984. After taking a year off, the Grand National returned for a three-year run commencing in 1984 and ending in 1987. Buick continued to tweak the model right up until its final year of production, which makes this 1987 Buick Grand National currently offered on the Bring a Trailer website a prime example of the species.

Purchased new by the seller on March 17, 1988, at Richard Buick in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, this Grand National has accumulated a mere 22,600 miles in its 30-year existence. Largely unmodified, the car features factory options including power windows, locks, driver’s seat, and antenna, plus cruise control, upgraded audio, and a car alarm. Although the car currently wears a set of 215/65 Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 tires on 15-inch American Racing wheels, the original wheels-and tires-are included with the sale. The aftermarket rolling stock was mounted in July 2018, when the owner awakened the car from its 11-year slumber and had a new battery and hood-lift supports fitted, along with a fuel-system flush and a rear brake adjustment. The seller mentions that he is aware that the bumper fillers are faded, but despite the availability of replacements, states he wished to leave the originals intact for the sale, as the car's bodywork is otherwise in original, untouched condition.

The original window sticker, sales invoice, loan contract, and owner's manual, plus service records and an accident-free Carfax report, will accompany the sale. The car holds a recent Pennsylvania state inspection and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller's name. If you've been watching the Buick Grand National market, this low-mileage and well-documented example is definitely worth consideration.
