Yahoo Autos One of the Twelve Original Jaguar E-Type Lightweights Is For Sale
Back in 1964, the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight wasn't as desirable as it is today. The company planned on building 18 Lightweights for competition use, but only managed to sell 12 examples before production ended. Since these cars are so rare, they've become a holy grail for classic Jaguar collectors everywhere, and almost never come up for sale. That's why we think this particular example will be the star of the show once it goes up for auction in August.
This particular Lightweight was the factory works entry for Jaguar for the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car was fielded by the Briggs Cunningham racing team, which later used it in the Road America 500 and the Bridgehampton 500. After retiring from competition, the car sat in the team's museum, before being passed around to a handful of collectors.
Now, the ultra-rare E-Type is set to be sold off by Bonhams during Monterey Car Week at the Quail Lodge Auction in August of this year. The auction's website listing doesn't provide a sale price estimate, but judging by a similar Lightweight that sold back in January, we think it'll be in the ballpark of at least $7 million.
For Jaguar collectors worldwide, this might be your only chance for awhile. So don't miss it.
