Driving a Mini with a giant Red Bull can glued onto the roof was the cheapest way to rock a new Cooper in college. That embarrassing freebie is mostly gone, but Mini has just introduced a discounted option package for college students that 9-to-5 adults can't buy.

The 2019 Cooper Hardtop Oxford Edition is now the cheapest Mini, at $20,600 for the two-door and $21,600 for the four-door. That's $2150 off the base MSRP of both models, except the Oxford comes standard with features that ordinarily cost thousands more to order. Several, including the six-speed automatic, 17-inch silver or black wheels, Mini Connected telematics services, and a panoramic moonroof, are normally bundled with big-dollar packages that turn the Mini into a $30,000 affair. The Oxford's heated front seats and black headliner go for $750 on regular Cooper models. Six exterior colors, including a bright red, blue, and British Racing Green, are available. A six-speed manual is optional.

The catch? You'll need a transcript showing your enrollment in an accredited college or university. Any associates, bachelors, graduate, medical, or law program counts, along with any diploma from those schools issued within the past 12 months. Considering how most automakers offer recent college grads just a few hundred dollars in incentives, Mini is quite generous by building a cheaper standalone model with extra equipment. In that sense, you could consider the Oxford Edition an affordable, three-cylinder version of Porsche's GTS trims. Hey, these kids need to start dreaming.
