For anyone who believed current Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe succeeding Martin Truex Jr. in the No. 19 Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing was strictly a rumor, a slip of the tongue by Christopher Bell Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway confirmed it.

During media availability, Bell was asked where he fell in the “leadership dynamic at JGR” and if he felt like he needed to assume a bigger role next year with Truex’s departure. He explained JGR’s competition meetings and that week-in-and-week-out, a different driver may lead the discussion. Then came the slip-up that left Bell blushing with embarrassment and the media in attendance laughing.

“I don’t think that there really is a leadership role in that aspect,” Bell said. “Whenever Chase comes into the car.”

It was then Bell realized his mistake. He fumbled for words saying, “Whenever, whenever we have a new driver. Whenever we have a new driver in the 19 car, whoever that is. Their experience level will dictate how much input they have in the team.”

Bell was still blushing as he left the media center.

It was within the last week that Briscoe emerged as the probable replacement for Truex in the No. 19 Toyota. Now, through the slip of a tongue, it’s been confirmed.
