People’s opinions of the Tesla Cybertruck run the range from calling it a ridiculous child’s drawing that will bomb in the market to claiming soon all truck makers will try mimicking its design. That angular, geometric body is quite polarizing, but a new development via Oracle is showing how the Cybertruck could be a rather interesting police vehicle.

Learn how Jackie Chan and Mitsubishi teamed up to impact the auto industry.

During a keynote address delivered during Oracle CloudWorld 2023, CTO Larry Ellison revealed the company’s new First Responder System. Using a “Satellite + Terrestiral Fail-Safe Mobile Network” Oracle aims to keep police officers and other first responders fed with the latest information as emergency situations can change rapidly.

What’s more, Ellison says the audio and visual network “never fails” as he used the Maui fire tragedy to showcase the pitfalls of systems currently in place. That network can connect to first responder vehicles, like Oracle’s Tesla Cybertruck police concept.

Not only would officers be fed navigation information to help them reach an incident with greater ease, they can use the plate reader and other features all through voice commands. Many times, police are typing or pressing one of many buttons in their cruiser while driving quickly to respond to an emergency, so allowing them to keep hands on the steering wheel is huge.

Even more compelling, officers responding to an active scene will get fed bodycam footage from their colleagues already there. This can help them know where they should approach a suspect, the exact location of other officers, and how the situation is unfolding in real time before they arrive.

Ellison disclosed that the Cybertruck is his “favorite car” and that he “knows too much about it” although he wouldn’t of course disclose what he knew. He did disclose that the Oracle solution just piggybacks onto the Tesla’s embedded tech, including the touchscreen and cameras. However, using a Tesla isn’t required for police departments and other agencies to get onboard with this tech.

This is actually the second police car Oracle has dreamed up. The first one was a Ford Explorer. However, to deploy the tech in the Ford, Oracle had to install a tablet at the top of the center stack. In the Tesla that isn’t necessary.

Not only would this technology be integrated into first responders’ vehicles, personnel would have wearable devices to monitor their movements, vitals, etc. Also, bodycams stream video to a command center, allowing for dispatchers and others to have greater contact and monitoring capabilities.

We expect not everyone will be excited about this technology. While it’s easy to see the good it could do, the potential for power hungry individuals to twist the tool for their own ill intentions is something which shouldn’t be avoided. But it looks like this will become reality, so everyone needs to be aware of what’s coming down the pipeline.
