Yahoo Autos Pagani Huayra Prototype Crashes in Germany
The official Twitter account for the police department in Aalen, Germany shared a picture last Friday of what looked to be a camouflaged Pagani Huayra test mule crashed into thick brush on the side of the road. German-language site STN.de reports the driver accelerated too quickly and lost control.
Curious to learn what happened, we contacted Pagani. A company spokesperson described the car as "an evolution of the Huayra Roadster," and said of the crash:
Yes, one of our development vehicles was crashed last week by one of our German partners. No one was injured. Neither the driver, nor the passenger reported any damages, both were unharmed, since the central monocoque has performed exceptionally as planned!
The Huayra uses a carbon fiber monocoque which, in addition to being lightweight, is also incredibly strong. The wreck doesn't look too severe-none of the visible body panels in the picture look damaged, and the passenger-side door seems to function normally.
As for what exactly was being tested? We don't have any concrete information, but the incident happened near Affalterbach, home of AMG. The Huayra, on sale since 2012, uses a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 built by Mercedes-AMG. Perhaps some sort of new engine testing was taking place right before this car bit the bush?
This just goes to show: Even supercar test drivers make mistakes.
