The competition was fierce this year. We had everything from the gorgeous plug-in hybrid Polestar 1 to the rip-snorting and rowdy Mini Cooper JCW GP. Luxurious coupes from Bentley and BMW and, yes, a rocket-quick pickup truck from Ram. It was a candy shop of horsepower and speed.

But after a day of laps at Lime Rock Park, one contender rose head and shoulders above the rest: the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. With 760 horsepower from a supercharged V-8 and the first dual-clutch transmission ever offered in a Mustang, it's not just a pony car—it's an approachable street demon and a track weapon rolled into one.
