The Indianapolis 500 dates back to 1911 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, only taking breaks for World Wars. In 2020, it was delayed for a global pandemic before Takuma Sato won his second 500 in August. Here we have every 500 winner from start to finish, along with some fast facts from each win. Three drivers have won four 500s. Seven have won three and 10 have won the Borg-Warner Trophy twice.
Ray Harroun - 1911
Harroun was the first Indy 500 winner with an average speed of 74.59 mph in the Marmon Wasp Special.
Joe Dawson - 1912
American Joe Dawson took the checkered flag in 1912 for the National Motor Vehicle Company in the NVM Special.
Jules Goux - 1913
Frenchman Goux (left) won the race behind the wheel of the Peugeot Special averaging 75.93 mph.
Rene Thomas - 1914
Thomas (France) won Indy for the Louis Delage Company at the fourth running of the 500.
Ralph DePalma - 1915
DePalma took the Indy win for E.C. Patterson in a Mercedes E.C. Patterson Special.
Dario Resta - 1916
UK driver Resta, seen here at the wheel of a Sunbeam, won the 500 with an average speed of 84 mph.
Howdy Wilcox - 1919
The Indy 500 wasn't held in 1917 or 1918 due to the war, American Wilcox took the checkered flag upon its return.
Gaston Chevrolet - 1920
Portrait of French-born American race car driver Gaston Chevrolet (1892 -1920) (right) and his mechanic John Bresnahan. Chevrolet drove a Monroe William Small Special for the win.
Tommy Milton - 1921 & 1923
Milton took the crown in both '21 and '23, first in a Louis Chevrolet Special, then in a H.C.S Motor Company Special.
Jimmy Murphy - 1922
Californian Jimmy Murphy, seen here in a Durant Special, won Indy with an average speed of 90.545 mph.
Joe Boyer/Lora L. Corum - 1924
Corum started the race and Boyer (pictured) finished in the #15 Duesenberg Special with an average speed of 98.234 mph.
Peter DePaolo - 1925
DePaolo, riding shotgun here, won Indy for the Duesenberg team with an average speed of 101.127 mph. That was the first year the 100-mph average mark was cracked.
Frank Lockhart - 1926
Lockhart, pictured here chasing a 1959 Alta of M. Adams at the Woodcote corner in a Vintage Sports Car Club race, won the Indy 500 in 1926 for Peter Kreis.
George Souders - 1927
Souders raced for William S. White in a Duesenberg in 1927's Indy 500.
Louis Meyer - 1928, 1933, 1936
Meyer, pictured here in a Stutz, won the Indy 500 in '28 with an average speed of 99.482 mph. He went faster in '33 and even faster in '36.
Ray Keech - 1929
American Ray Keech drove for M.A. Yagle in 1929 in a Simplex Piston Ring Yagle Special.
Billy Arnold - 1930
Arnold, driving, won Indy in 1930 in a Miller Hartz Special.
Louis Schneider - 1931
Schneider drove a Bowes Seal Fast Schneider Special to victory with a 96.629 mph average.
Fred Frame - 1932
American Fred Frame drove for Harry Hartz in a Miller-Harry Hartz Special.
Bill Cummings - 1934
Cummings, middle of the first row, drove a Boyle Products Henning Special to victory in 1934.
Kelly Petillo - 1935
Petillo drove a Gilmore Speedway Petillo Special to victory with an average speed of 106.240 mph.
Wilbur Shaw - 1937, 1939, 1940
Shaw drove an Offenhauser-powered car in his first Indy win, and a Maserati-powered Boyle Racing Headquarters Special the next two.
Floyd Roberts - 1938
Roberts drove for Lou Moore in 1938 and won the 500 with an average speed of 117.200 mph.
Mauri Rose - 1941, 1947, 1948
Mauri Rose won the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway three times. His first win came in 1941 when his own car suffered mechanical failure and he took over the driving chores from Floyd Davis and went on to post the victory. He also won back-to-back Indy 500s in 1947 and 1948.
George Robson - 1946
World War II stopped the race from '42 to '45. Robson won Indy for Thorne Engineering in 1946 behind the wheel of the Thorne Engineering Special with a speed of 114.820 mph. He was tragically killed the same year in an accident during at race at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bill Holland - 1949
After Rose won the next two Indy 500s, Holland drove the Offenhauser-powered Blue Crown Spark Plug Moore Special in 1949 with an average speed of 121.327 mph (seen here in the Love Machine & Tool Offenhauser at the California State Fairgrounds).
Johnnie Parsons - 1950
Johnnie Parsons (in car), won in an Offy-Kurtis Kraft in '50 with a speed of 124.002 mph. Pictured here in the Belond Equa-Flow Exhaust Special in 1953.
Lee Wallard - 1951
Lee Wallard continued the Offenhauser winning run in the Murrell Belanger Special in 1951. Seen here in 1948 in a Meyers/Offenhauser at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Troy Ruttman - 1952
Troy Ruttman, seen here at USAC Indy Car race at Trenton International Speedway, drove for J.C. Agajanian in 1952, winning with an average speed of 128.992 mph.
Bull Vukovich - 1953, 1954
Vukovic drove an Offy-powered Kurtis Kraft in '53 and '54, averaging 128 and 130 mph average speed for owner Howard B. Keck.
Bob Sweikert - 1955
Sweikert, seen here getting a smooch from Dinah Shore, won the Indy 500 in an Offenhauser-powered Watson called the John Zink Special.
Pat Flaherty - 1956
Flaherty won for John Zink (the owner's second consecutive 500 win) with an average speed of 128.490 mph.
Sam Hanks - 1957
Hanks drove a Salih-Offenhauser to victory in '57 in the Belond Exhaust George Salih Special with an average speed of 135.601 mph.
Jimmy Bryan - 1958
Bryan won for team owner George Salih with another Offy engine in 1958, his average speed was 133.971 mph.
Rodger Ward - 1959, 1962
Ward drove for the Leader Cards team in 1959 behind the wheel of a Watson-Offenhauser called the 500 Roadster Special. His average speed was 135.857 mph. In '62 his speed was above 140 mph.
Jim Rathmann - 1960
Rathmann (left) drove the Ken-Paul Special to victory in 1960 continuing the Offenhauser winning run. Seen here clowning around with his then mechanic Henry "Smokey" Yunick at Indy Speedway.
