Los Angeles plays host to the first major U.S. auto show of each new-car season, and for 2016 the AutoMobility LA press preview contained a wide variety of new cars, trucks, and SUVs.

• 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

  Based on the same platform and using the same powertrains as the new Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sport sedan, the Stelvio is a crossover SUV more suited to the race track than a mountain trail. Shown here, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which packs 505 twin-turbocharged horsepower.

• 2017 Aston Martin Vanquish S

  Starting in December, people with a spare 300 grand in their pockets can blow it on the S-badged version of the second-generation Vanquish. Offered as a coupe or a convertible, the Vanquish S gets minor changes that add up to slight improvements in performance and requisite “mine is better than yours” appearance changes for when it rolls up to the valet stand.

• 2018 Audi A5 and S5 Sportback

  Audi may no longer offer the A4 Avant station wagon in the United States (at least not without an Allroad SUV costume), but the new A5 and S5 Sportback models help to ease the pain by providing spiffier styling combined with extra cargo capacity.

• 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

  Chevrolet takes on the Tacoma TRD Pro with the new Colorado ZR2, a Baja-inspired midsize truck with an available diesel engine, a functional design, and engineering changes intended to make it genuinely fearsome off-road.

• 2018 Ford EcoSport

  Ford joins the subcompact crossover SUV party with the 2018 EcoSport (pronounced echo-sport). Based on a vehicle that is currently available in other parts of the world, the new EcoSport is aimed at younger buyers seeking space and technology.

• 2018 Genesis G80 3.3T Sport

  Genesis spices up the G80 lineup with the new 3.3T Sport, which is equipped with the same twin-turbocharged V-6 engine offered in the larger G90 flagship sedan. With more power and torque, a continuous damping control suspension, sport seats, and more aggressive styling, the G80 3.3T Sport lends added legitimacy to Hyundai’s new luxury brand.

• 2017 Honda Civic Si Prototype

  Civic fans have been waiting a long time for this car. Turbocharged and loaded with torque, the new 2017 Civic Si breaks with high-revving tradition. Honda also installs adaptive steering and suspension components, adding an extra layer of sophistication to the car. Otherwise, the recipe is a familiar, and tasty, one.

• Jaguar Classic XKSS

  In 1957, Jaguar built 16 XKSS models, based on the D-Type racing car and modified for use on public roads. A fire destroyed more than half of them. Now, Jaguar’s Classic division will recreate the nine cars lost to the flames, and offer them to selected company customers and collectors for $1.2 million each. Shown here is one of those continuation models, which debuted in Los Angeles.

• Jaguar I-Pace Concept

  About as far from the XKSS as Jaguar could possibly get, the company’s new I-Pace Concept is an electrified SUV with a driving range of 220 miles. Jaguar says the I-Pace will be on sale in 2018, though its final form is more likely to take the shape of the production F-Pace than this wilder concept vehicle.

• 2017 Jeep Compass

  Slotted between the tiny Renegade and midsize Cherokee, the redesigned 2017 Jeep Compass replaces both the current Compass and the Patriot in the popular and highly competitive compact crossover SUV segment. It will offer greater off-roading capability than other models in the class.

• 2017 Land Rover Discovery

  Fresh from a Weight Watchers program, the redesigned 2017 Discovery sheds pounds while retaining the legendary off-road capabilities for which it is known. The new 3-row SUV replaces the old and heavy LR4 in Land Rover’s lineup.

• Lexus Sriracha IS

  Lexus has updated the IS sports sedan for 2017, and to draw attention to the improved model it built a one-off version called the Sriracha IS. Dipped in unique Sriracha Red paint, featuring green accents, and equipped with a trunk full of hot sauce as well as a key fob designed to squirt the condiment upon whatever he or she might be eating, the Lexus Sriracha IS is definitely zesty.

• 2017 Mazda CX-5

  Though it looks familiar, the redesigned 2017 Mazda CX-5 is all new, inside and out. With this second-generation CX-5, Mazda refines its design themes, improves interior materials, and heightens the driving experience, further honing the visual and dynamic character it seeks to infuse in each of its products.

• 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63

  Who says a sports car can’t have 4 doors? Equipped with up to 603 horsepower, good for arrival at 60 mph in a claimed 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph, the new Mercedes-AMG E63 utterly thunders down any road.

• 2017 Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet

  There will be just 300 examples built of the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet, which is based upon the S-Class convertible and upfitted with every imaginable luxury, and just 75 of them will land in the U.S. market. The 621-horsepower V-12 engine isn’t the star here. Rather, opulence rules. If you want to know the price, you can’t afford the car.

• 2017 Mini Countryman

  Completely redesigned, the new 2017 Mini Countryman succeeds the recently introduced Mini Clubman as the largest Mini ever. Sized like a compact crossover SUV, the new Countryman can be customized with a variety of paint, trim, powertrain, and equipment choices, pushing the reasonable starting price well into entry-luxury territory.

• 2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Edition

  In association with the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” film, Nissan revealed this special edition of its Rogue compact crossover SUV. Exclusive detailing, such as a blacked-out grille and wheels, and special badges identify the 5,400 examples of the Rogue One Star Wars Edition. Each one also comes with a full-size replica of a Death Trooper helmet.

• 2017 Nissan Sentra NISMO

  Nissan also introduced a sportier NISMO-tuned Sentra in Los Angeles. It uses the same turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in the Sentra SR Turbo, paired with unique styling details, upgraded steering and suspension components, performance-bolstered seats, and more.

• 2017 Porsche Panamera

  Porsche began fleshing out its redesigned Panamera lineup in L.A., introducing the new entry-level models equipped with a turbocharged, 2.9-liter V-6 engine making 330 horsepower and driving the rear or all four wheels. Long-wheelbase variants of the Panamera also appeared in Los Angeles, including a new E-Hybrid model.

• 2017 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive

  Smart introduced a new electric version of its Fortwo city car, which will be offered as a coupe or as a convertible. Smart promises improved driving range, but hasn’t announced an official number. It goes on sale in the spring of 2017 and requires 16.5 hours to fully recharge using a standard household power outlet.

• Subaru VIZIV-7 Concept

  Remove some of the more garish design details from the Subaru VIZIV-7 Concept and what you see here is the automaker’s new 7-passenger crossover SUV. Rumored to be called the Ascent, Subaru’s new three-row family hauler will arrive for the 2018 or 2019 model year.

• 2018 Toyota C-HR

  Styling sells cars, so Toyota should expect lots of cash-strapped Millennials to want its new 2018 C-HR. A 5-door hatchback with bold yet balanced styling, the C-HR rides tall but does not offer optional all-wheel drive. A 144-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only choice, and each C-HR is well equipped right out of the so-called box.

• 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

  Volkswagen’s new Atlas is a midsize, 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUV. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is standard, with a 280-horsepower V-6 engine available as an option. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the new Atlas is assembled by Americans for Americans.

• 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf

  VW’s electric car, the e-Golf receives a more powerful 134-horsepower motor and a 50% increase in driving range, now providing 125 miles of travel between charges, according to the automaker. Styling changes and new driver-assistance technologies debut, along with a digital virtual instrumentation setup. In 2018, next-generation infotainment systems arrive.

• Volkswagen Passat GT Concept

  A new sport sedan, the Volkswagen Passat GT Concept is said to embody feedback from both the automaker’s dealers and its customers. Read between those lines and it appears likely that this V-6-powered sport sedan will be in showrooms soon.
