Pirelli will use its ultra-soft Formula 1 tire compound during this weekend’s United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas to raise awareness for breast cancer funding and research through the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

As a series, Formula 1 has limited its efforts to support benevolent efforts, making Pirelli’s gesture - albeit through an official F1 supplier - rather rare.

Although no financial donations were mentioned by Pirelli’s Mario Isola, who heads its auto racing program, there is a hope the initiative will push the Susan G. Komen organization closer to the $1 billion mark in contributions since it was formed in 1982.

“For the United States Grand Prix, we’re once again taking a range of softer tire compounds than we have done for previous races there, with the ultra-soft tire available in Austin for the first time in the color pink - a one-off event to highlight the brilliant work of the Susan G.Komen Foundation,” Isola said.

“This should bring lap times down, continuing the trend we have seen over the course of the season. Austin though is one of the hardest tracks to predict due to variable weather, and we’ve seen a variety of pit stop strategies there in the past. These could involve all three Pirelli tire compounds this time, with the soft tire being a good potential option for the race as well”.
