Yahoo Autos Plugged In: Buick Velite 6 PHEV and EV Unveiled
General Motors is rolling out another electrified vehicle with its new Buick Velite 6 crossover. The model is designed to sit above the smaller, Chinese-market Buick Velite 5 hatchback, which is a rebadged version of the Chevrolet Volt that is sold in the United States.
The larger Velite 6 will be available with either a plug-in-hybrid powertrain or as an all-electric vehicle. The plug-in hybrid relies on a combination of two electric motors and a gasoline-fed engine for motivation. The internal-combustion engine is a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter, like that found under the hood of the smaller Velite 5/Chevy Volt.
The Velite 6 PHEV can switch between being powered by the electric motors, the gasoline engine, or some combination of both. A lithium-ion battery pack stores electricity for the electric motors.
Although Buick didn’t reveal power specifics or an EV range, the brand does note the Velite 6 PHEV will be able to travel almost 435 miles before needing to be recharged and refilled.
Buick didn’t release many details about the Velite 6 EV, but it’s likely to have a larger lithium-ion battery pack than its PHEV counterpart.
Like the Velite 5, the Buick Velite 6 is expected to remain exclusive to the Chinese market; neither the plug-in hybrid nor the EV models are anticipated to make their way to the States.
