Porsche may apply the formula from its stripped-down 911 T to the 718 Cayman sports car, according to a report from AutoExpress that states a lighter-weight Cayman T is on its way. Like the 911 T, it'll feature a simplified interior with some elements removed to drop pounds and certain bits of performance-focused equipment included as standard.

The Cayman T's modifications will reportedly reduce curb weight by 44 pounds, thanks to similar tweaks as the 911 T including thinner window glass, fabric door pulls, and a lack of features including a blank where the audio system would be. The Cayman T is also reported to come standard with equipment such as the Sport Chrono package and a sport exhaust-both of which are included on the 911 T.

Given that the 911 Carrera T starts at a steep $103,150, a similar version of the Cayman would offer Porsche purists a much less expensive way to get into a driver-focused machine. Because the 718 Cayman T is rumored to use the same turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four as the Cayman S and GTS, it would slot in between those two models and likely carry a starting price somewhere in the $70,000 range. So far, there's only discussion of a T version of the 718 Cayman coupe, not of the 718 Boxster convertible. This follows the precedent of the 911 T, which is only offered as a coupe.

There's no word on timing yet for the upcoming 718 Cayman T, but if it comes to fruition, expect it sooner rather than later given that the 718 lineup is nearing the end of its life cycle. A Porsche representative told C/D that the company could not comment on this speculation. We'll keep an eye out for any new information and update this post as it comes to light.
