When Porsche announced that it was bringing a 956 and its uncorked 919 EVO LMP1 machine to the Nürburgring, we hoped that meant a record attempt was in order. In 1983, after all, the all-time Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record, a 6:11.13 was set by driver Stefan Bellof in a 956. The 919, fresh off its blistering Spa lap record, looked like it could go and beat it.

Then the two cars took a parade lap on the circuit, and that was it. No record attempt by the 919. Perhaps the modern prototype was too fast for the dangerous Nordschleife.

Apparently not, because by the looks of things, Porsche is looking to lay down a quick time with the 919 at the Nordshchleife. Road & Track contributor and 'Ring insider Dale Lomas tweeted out that Porsche hired the track to test the 919 Evo, possibly to gather data before a future record attempt.

There's also video of the 919 attacking the Nordschleife, and holy hell does it look quick.

If any car were posed to beat Bellof's record in the 956, it'd be the 919 Evo. Untethered from the rulebooks of any racing series, the 919 Evo is the ultimate sports prototype, with gobs of power and downforce. During his record-setting lap at Spa, Neel Jani experienced 5Gs of lateral load, and hit 190 mph in the famous Eau Rogue corner.

We've reached out to Porsche to learn more about what the 919 is doing at the 'Ring.
