A Porsche 928 and a Mercedes-Benz 500E Make a Perfect V8 Pair

From Road & Track

For Icelandic airline pilot Torfi Sigurjonsson, nothing compares to a big V8. Ever since he had a Mercedes-Benz 560SEL, he says he's been hooked on eight-cylinder German cars. "You have to try it to believe it," Sigurjonsson says. "It's a nice feeling just to drive around not too fast. You know of all of the power in there. And knowing that you have it, that's a good feeling."

When he began building a car collection, the car at the top of his list was another big Mercedes-the 500E. But he couldn't find a clean enough version in Europe. No, he had to go all the way to New Jersey to find his perfect V8 Merc.

For three years, he was content with his W124 Mercedes. But when he saw a yellow Porsche 928 S4 advertised at a good price, he couldn't stop himself. Before he knew it, a second V8-powered German car was in his garage.

Sigurjonsson says there aren't many opportunities to drive fast in Iceland, which is why it's important to drive something you enjoy. And both his 500E and 928 are enjoyable, even at low speeds. One is a grand tourer, and the other is a luxury sedan, but they're both excellent examples of what a German V8 car should be.

"I try to keep my life not too complicated, but I have this car fetish. V8 fetish," says Sigurjonsson. "You only have one life, so I try to make the most out of it."
