The New Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Is Seriously Quick

From Road & Track

This is the hybrid version of Porsche's redesigned Panamera sedan-the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. But don't think for a second that Porsche has taken the ridiculously fast Panamera Turbo and turned it into a boring commuter car. No, this hybrid is a performance hybrid.

Under the hood, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid packs a twin-turbo V6 that's good for 330 horsepower and 331 lb.-ft. of torque. The car's electric motor is good for another 136 horses and 295 lb.-ft. of twist, bringing the system total up to 462 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. No, those numbers don't add up perfectly, but electric powertrains don't always follow straight addition.

Regardless, that's enough power to launch this all-wheel-drive Panamera to 60 mph in a claimed 4.4 seconds and give it a top speed of 172 mph. That's not nearly as quick as the Turbo version's time of 3.6 seconds, but it's still plenty respectable. And while American fuel economy figures haven't yet been released, we imagine you'll get far better gas mileage in the Hybrid than in the Turbo.

If you're light on the throttle, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid also offers a full 31 miles of all-electric range. For a plug-in hybrid, that's pretty respectable and could easily be enough to make shorter commutes without using any gas. Using a 240-volt charger, the battery can be fully charged in three hours.

Look for the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid at the Paris Motor Show next month and in North American dealerships next summer. Pricing will be announced closer to the car's launch.
