Yahoo Autos Porsche Is Reportedly Planning a Smaller Version of the Mission E Sedan
It seems Porsche is doing some serious long-term thinking when it comes to electric cars, because according to a new report, the automaker is planning on creating a smaller electric vehicle based off it's soon-to-come Mission E sedan (pictured in concept form above).
A Thursday report by Automobile Magazine's well-connected Georg Karcher quotes Porsche CEO Oliver Blume as saying the architecture behind the Mission E sedan is scalable. Codenamed J1, Porsche's low-floored electric vehicle platform can be made both longer and shorter in order to compete in different segments without increasing development cost significantly.
Automobile reports that while Blume declined to confirm a smaller Mission E, apparently, its development is partly the reason why Porsche's long-rumored 960 supercar has been delayed.
Thanks to this adjustable platform, Porsche can set its sights on several different sectors of the growing EV market. A larger variant can be aimed at the emerging super-luxury electric segment, while a smaller, cheaper version could face off against cars like the Tesla Model 3 and BMW iNext.
Additionally, Automobile reports Porsche is considering another crossover to add to its SUV lineup, which currently consists of the big, Audi Q7-based Cayenne, and smaller Audi Q5-based Macan. This car would reportedly slot under the Macan in the lineup, and be based off either the Audi Q3 chassis or even an upcoming Volkswagen platform.
Porsche has come a long way since its days as a low-volume sports car manufacturer. With three different four-doors in its current lineup, Porsche is truly a mainstream automaker. It's only natural it starts thinking like one and gets into the EV business in a significant way.
