Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Unveiled in Record-Setting Nurburgring Run

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, a highly-anticipated entrant into the high-performance electric vehicle arena, has finally come out of the shadows. The car was recently spotted at the Nurburgring racetrack without any camouflage, revealing its racier aesthetics. Interestingly, not one but three prototypes were observed at the track, apparently in the midst of a lap record attempt, suggesting that Porsche is pulling no punches with its latest electric flagship.

Serving as the peak of Porsche's soon-to-be-updated Taycan line, the Turbo GT is designed for high-power performance and track capability. First seen in spy photos back in October 2022, the latest sightings reveal several notable design changes. The redesigned front bumper is more aggressive, featuring enlarged side intakes and fins extending from a broader front splitter. The LED headlights also see an update, now framed by more sharply contoured front fenders.

At the rear, the Turbo GT boasts enhanced aerodynamic features, including additional vents on the rear bumper and an extended diffuser with extra fins. What caught everyone’s eye, however, is the carbon-fiber fixed rear wing perched atop a new ducktail spoiler. Also made of carbon fiber are the car's mirror caps. Interestingly, the prototypes omitted the fender-mounted charging port on the left side and were equipped with different five-spoke alloy wheels, behind which sit larger drilled brake discs.

Although a roll cage was installed for the prototype's hot laps, it's not expected to be part of the final production model. Yet, what makes this new Taycan variant particularly tantalizing is the rumored tri-motor electric powertrain. It's said to deliver an astonishing 1,000 hp, a marked increase over the Taycan Turbo S's 750 hp. This puts it in direct competition with Tesla’s Model S Plaid, which currently holds the lap record with a time of 7:25.23.

During its recent Nurburgring outing, despite inclement weather, the Taycan Turbo GT reportedly clocked a lap time that falls between Rimac Nevera's 7:05.298 and Tesla Model S Plaid's 7:25.231. Factory driver Lars Kern was at the helm, boosting anticipation for what the car can achieve under more favorable conditions.

While a full reveal is expected in the coming months, likely alongside the refreshed Taycan line-up, some speculate that Porsche could unveil the Taycan Turbo GT at the Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca, where a "surprise" has been promised. Whatever the case may be, the Taycan Turbo GT has already set the automotive world abuzz, and it looks poised to reset benchmarks in the electric vehicle category.
