Porsche to Unveil Panamera Hybrid in Paris
German sports car maker Porsche has revealed that it will unveil a fourth variant in its Panamera large premium car line—the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid—at the Paris Motor Show in early October. The new model’s source of motivation is based on the same hybrid powertrain with two electric motors that is used in Porsche’s limited-production 918 Spyder large premium sporty supercar.
The all-wheel-drive (AWD) Panamera plug-in hybrid generates 462 total horsepower and 515 lb.-ft. of torque and is powered by a performance hybrid powertrain that was used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid to win and take victory laps in both the 2015 and 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans races.
Hybrid for Porsche means performance and efficiency with an all-electric range of 50 kilometers (31+ miles). The new hybrid always starts in electric mode with a 136-horsepower electric motor that can accelerate to 140 km/h (86.9 mph). Combined with the gas-powered 2.9-liter V-6 twin-turbo engine that makes 330 horsepower and 331 lb.-ft. of torque, the car can reach a top speed of 278 km/h (172.74 mph) and zip to 100 km/h (62.3 mph) in just 4.6 seconds, according to Porsche.
The automaker matches this combination of motors and engine with an efficient 8-speed Porsche PDK transmission. The Panamera’s E-Hybrid motors receive energy from a powerful 14.1-kWh liquid-cooled Lithium-ion battery. The new E-Hybrid can be charged in just 5.8 hours with a 230-volt charging station, Porsche claims. An optional on-board high-speed charger can power up the battery in just 3.6 hours, the automaker says.
The second-generation Panamera features a new 12.3-in. touch-screen control display over the center stack in what Porsche calls its Advanced Cockpit with touch-sensitive panels and displays. Two 7-in. screens provide instrument and control details, including a power meter with data on energy usage. A standard Sport Chrono package features driving mode selectors.
Pricing for the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is not available, although Porsche officials say the car will have a starting MSRP that will be lower than the Panamera 4S. The new Panamera hybrid is slated to reach U.S. showrooms in mid-2017, possible as a 2018 model.
