This article, originally published October 8, 2020, has been updated with patent drawings of the Sabre published to Japan's Intellectual property office.

Spy photos of what seem to be a new McLaren supercar called the "Sabre" have emerged on Instagram, giving us a good look at what the British carmaker has in store for the future of its top-tier lineup. The images, which look to have been taken at a private McLaren event, show a fully camouflaged track weapon with tons of functional aero, including a Senna GTR-inspired fascia and rear wing.

According to Carscoops, this car is BC-03, a bespoke customer commission built by McLaren Special Operations, first confirmed by the company all the way back in 2018. The publication points out it looks identical to leaked images of the supposed McLaren supercar leaked in 2019, as well as patent drawings published to Japan's intellectual property office in 2020, posted online by the Taycan EV forum.

The BC-03, if you remember, is supposed to be inspired by McLaren's Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo concept, launched in 2017. Though it's highly unlikely the Sabre will get that car's unique prone "seating" position, it could get the 1150-horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 hybrid drivetrain, according to Carscoops. McLaren sent us the following statement when reached for comment on the above speculation:

McLaren Special Operations engages in numerous special and bespoke customer projects. The nature of these programs means that the details shared with customers are not publicly discussed by McLaren and that is the case in this instance.

Seeing a prototype like this means it's only a matter of time until the car is fully unveiled. We can't wait to learn more.
