Project Car Mustang Heads To Auction

A 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in need of work is set to appear at a Mecum auction this October.

The Boss 302 model was developed in the late 1960s for the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) Trans-Am racing series. The engine capacity was limited to 305 cubic inches, so Ford used a 302 cubic inch V8, which inspired the car's name. The name "Boss" came about when Larry Shinoda, who led the project, referred to it as "the boss's car" in reference to Ford President Semon "Bunkie" Knudson.

The Boss 302 debuted in 1969 and initially lost to the Camaros in the Trans-Am series. However, the car turned things around in 1970 by winning the SCCA Trans Am Championship for Ford.

The four-speed manual Boss 302 currently up for auction could use some restoration, or at least a new paint job. It provides an opportunity for someone interested in completing the unfinished work or simply getting it back on the road as is.

As this car heads to the Mecum auction block, it offers a chance for a new owner to take part in its history and future.
