A Properly Tuned GTI Might Actually Be a Better Golf R

From Road & Track

Compared to a stock MKVI Volkswagen GTI, this particular one makes a lot more power. How much more power? Well, while the regular GTI made 200 horsepower, this one makes almost double that-a claimed 360 horses. Heck, even compared to the current Golf R, that's a lot of power.

And with so much twist routed to the front wheels, you'd be safe to expect it to torque-steer like crazy. But it doesn't. That's largely because the owner fitted his car with an aftermarket limited-slip differential-along with quite a few other mods.

At this point, you have to wonder. If Volkswagen had swapped the electronic differential on the new GTI for a nicer mechanical one like this car has, could it have gotten away with offering the Golf R without all-wheel drive? It's possible.

Then again, maybe the lesson here is that instead of spending $40,000 on a Golf R, you should get a GTI and spend the money you save on a tune and an LSD. With any luck, you'll still have a few bucks left over to go to the tire fund.
